Our aims

The film, TV, and cinema industry plays a key part in the functioning of British society and the representation of the UK across the world – which is why ensuring equity is so important to the future of society.

Reel Impact was created in 2022 to support the creation of a more inclusive, equitable, and anti-racist industry that properly recognises and values the expertise of its Black and Global Majority members – the crucial contributions they have made and will continue to make.

Reel Impact is a constantly evolving, co-designed initiative that centres Black and Global Majority voices in its development and decision-making. As a learning organisation, the Charity is committed to ensuring that the initiative delivers real impact in a rapidly changing and challenging environment.

Reel Impact awardees from the first two rounds of funding

The first two rounds of Reel Impact gave awards to a total of 9 organisations and 12 individuals.

The goal of Reel Impact is sustainable change and legacy for Black and Global Majority professionals. We know that progress never happens overnight. It has to be a long-term vision where equality, diversity, and inclusion are woven into the fabric of British film and television production. This way we can help open the doors to fresh narratives, creative innovation and opportunity.

The need for Reel Impact

Frequently asked questions

Read through the frequently asked questions for Reel Impact.

  • Supporting underrepresented voices in film and TV

As one of the inaugural recipients of the Film and TV Charity’s Reel Impact Fund, Dean reflects on what true opportunity looks like for underrepresented filmmakers – and how targeted initiatives are finally opening once gatekept doors.

The need for people from Black and Global Majority backgrounds to meaningfully contribute to the film and television industry is essential for a well-functioning society in which we can tell our own narratives and have power over our own representation. Reel Impact recognises that there are systemic obstacles disproportionately disempowering Black and Global Majority people in the sector from having that voice. The answer to how to overcome and dismantle those obstacles must come from Black and Global Majority people themselves.
