Pioneering action for better mental health

Last year we asked the film, TV and cinema workforce to tell us about their mental health as part of ground-breaking research into the wellbeing of people working in our industry.

What did we see?

The centrepiece of the research was an online survey – over 9,000 people responded. The Looking Glass survey results reveal a mental health crisis in the workforce.

Nearly 9 in 10 people working in our industry have experienced a mental health problem.

Analysis of the underlying causes reveals three areas that interact to create a perfect storm for poor mental health – the conditions of work, the industry’s culture, and its capability to provide support.

 

What’s next?

A collaborative approach is crucial to address the deep-seated issues identified in the research. We’re convening The Film and TV Taskforce on Mental Health with forward-thinking leaders drawn from across the industry – in development, production, animation, broadcasting, distribution and cinema – to champion urgent and long-term action to change our industry for the better.

The Whole Picture Programme is an evidence-based plan for change. Commitments have already been made by Banijay, BBC, BBC Studios, Channel 4, Disney, Endemol Shine, ITV and Sky, and others are joining us every day.
